The people of the first century were surrounded by paganism. There was a god for everything and the people were in bondage, unable to do anything about it.
The gods they trusted were idols who could do nothing, but there was power behind them in real spiritual entities, rebellious spirits who oppressed and possessed people. The people were powerless against them.
Then Jesus arrives showing the complete dominance of the kingdom of God over the kingdom of darkness. He healed and delivered people with a word.
And now the forces of darkness are back. Why? Because the culture has turned its back on God and messiah. But the power of the kingdom is still there today for those who remain steadfast in their faith. We who believe are not powerless. But we must remain faithful.
