2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. – Psalm 91:2-3

The LORD has many titles, some of which are here in Psalm 91. We are familiar with some of them:

  • Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide)
  • Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace)
  • Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner)
  • Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd).

He has several more in Psalm 91. Jehovah Metsudah means “The LORD my fortress”. When you are abiding in the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1) you are very close to the LORD. You are inside a fortress which cannot be breached by the enemy. Since it cannot be breached or overrun, the only way the enemy can get to you is to convince you to come out of the fortress. The protection is not outside the fortress. The protection is inside the fortress. How can a fortress protect you when you are outside of it exposed to the enemy?

The enemy tries to convince you to trust in anything except the LORD. Trust your politicians. Trust the culture. Trust in the media. Another tactic to get you to come out from the fortress is fear. Threats, intimidation, demands. Bend your knee to the latest politically correct demand or else.

Staying inside the fortress is crucial. The only protection you have in a world overrun by darkness is Jehovah Metsudah – the LORD your fortress. To receive the protection of the fortress you have to remain in the fortress. Don’t be enticed out. Don’t be deceived. Do not fear the savage wolves of the present darkness. Stay in the fortress of the LORD, the God of Israel, the Most High, the Almighty.

He will deliver you. He will snatch you away from the trap set by the enemy. He will protect you from the pestilence. But you have to remain in the fortress. Remember Psalm 91:1 (previous post). Come into the secret place under the shadow, the fortress, the refuge of Almighty God.

How do you get inside the fortress? The cross of Jesus Christ is the threshold into the fortress. His name means: the LORD is salvation. The Psalm says “my God, in Him will I trust.” Don’t trust in yourself, don’t trust the internet, and please don’t trust in politicians or the government. Trust in Christ – the doorway into the fortress.

Get inside the fortress. Sit down and rest. Stay there. Don’t ever leave.
